How will Chinas energy consumption effect the West?

You can’t turn on the TV or open a magazine these days without reading about the rise of China and how they will be the next economic superpower within the next few decades.

China has 1.3 billion people living within its borders and an economy growing at over 10% per year. For energy consumption to keep pace with economic growth China will have to harness every fuel source available including renewable energy and nuclear power. There is not enough gas and oil in the world to satisfy China, not with it’s neighbour India with 1 billion people also having a huge demand for the same resources. An increase in the rise in personal car ownership alone could mean an extra billion cars on the road worldwide within the next 10 years. The majority of these will be in China and India. While the West is considered developed and is growing slowly, the Chinese economy is still growing fast and is expanding the range of products and services that it offers to the West. Some of these products that are manufactured such as plastics and chemicals will require even more oil. As the Chinese economy expands then so will the demand. As people move from urban to rural areas, the use and availability of electricity and gas in the home will also increase causing further strain on its reserves.

This growing economy needs the energy to drive this growth, there is only a limited amount of fossil fuels in the world and the oil and gas will not last for ever. This is leading to increasing competing demands for a countires resources, be that in Latin America or Africa. It also means that everybody buys oil from countries that have appaliing human rights issues. If America stops buying oil from Sudan because it is persecuting its citizens….China steps in to buy the oil and vice versa in countless countries around the world. Until recently, Chinese companies seemed most comfortable operating in locations not dominated by the major oil companies often owned by UK or USA companies. This means that countries like Angola and Iran have partnerships and joint ventures with the Chinese. For example, over half of Chinese overseas oil production currently comes from Sudan. In 2005 the Chinese wanted to buy a USA oil company but congress blocked this on the basis that national energy security was at stake. There is a little irony in that USA companies expect to buy energy companies all over the word, but if a key competitor wants to buy one of theirs and is even offering a higher price then the deal is blocked.

Nobody can argue that China now plays a key role in the supply and demand of many global commodity markets including steel, cement, and oil. This need for resources combined with the bags of cash from its economic growth means that China can afford to buy any oil field and rights anywhere in the world. A position that only the USA held in the past.

Some argue that the allied forces only went to war in Iraq to get their hands on the oil, time will tell if this true as oil production is currently lower than when Saddam was in power due to sabotage and security problems. Will the next war have oil as its stated aim and not Weapons of Mass Destruction?

The Energy Crisis : Headlines in the 60’s and 70’s

All the rage in the revolutionary years of the 1960’s and 1970’s were the smaller, more compact vehicles. It’s the time during which we saw the first emergence of awareness of our planet, what we were doing to it and the dawn of environmental “green” thinking. Just as a critically ill person becomes well and forgets about his or her life crisis situation, we Americans forget about the energy crunch.

As the 70’s gave way to the 80’s, we lost sight of burning fossil fuel. The car models became increasingly bigger and more “maxed out” for luxury and status. The comfort and size of your vehicle became more of a status symbol for the wealthier segment, and a bigger car became a coveted item.

Pick up trucks even became more prevalent, and not often for hauling heavy loads. SUV’s abound today. Hummers are popular for the elite crowd as a novelty vehicle for those that could afford it as a primary vehicle, or even more often as a secondary vehicle.

Often these big, burly SUV’s are simply used to take one, fairly small person to and from work and other social activities, and occasionally to haul a slightly larger load – maybe that of two to three people.

Rarely today do we hear of people carpooling to and from work (gosh, a lot of kids today probably don’t even know what carpooling is). Public transportation in small outlying suburbs to major cities nearby is few and far between, making it an impractical way to get to and from work every day.

Only since gas prices have risen in recent times, hovering at or over three dollars in many states and regions, has our attention come back to the “energy crisis” we face today, and that we may even face at a deeper level in the near future.

Now, as it puts our society in a family budget crisis, possibly we wil look for more practical solutions, as well as cleaner burning fuels and options that are healthier for us and our surrounding environment.

Who knows, maybe carpooling and new and improved forms of public transportation will become a focus if this energy crisis continues to show signs of sticking around.

Hopefully the government, whose responsibility it is to respond to public need, will look for mass transit to extend to more far reaching suburbs for more economical and convenient methods to get people to and from work, and to get out and spend money as well, all of which keep our economy moving.

In the bigger picture, the crisis of global warming and emissions of fossil fuels will be brought under better control if we can find alternatives to some of our more earth-cluttering energy materials today.

The scientists of the 60’s and 70’s had warned us time and time again that the energy crisis we are currently experiencing would happen, and yet we didn’t really focus on doing anything about it until it was too late.

Now that we see what this kind of a shortage can do to us, we can only hope our top scientists and government are working on better, more efficient solutions rather than resting on their laurels and waiting for the next big scare.

Business Energy Contracts: Choosing The Right One For Your Business

Keeping costs low is a crucial part of any business whether it be SME (Small or Medium Enterprise) or a Corporate entity. One way of lowering a businesses’ costs is through their energy usage. Selecting a suitable supplier with the right business energy contract can have a big impact on energy bills and savings.

What are the different types of business energy contracts?Fixed Energy Contract
A fixed energy contract is when a contract is drawn up with an energy supplier and a business will pay an agreed fixed rate for the duration of their contract.

There are two types of fixed contract, ‘fully fixed’ and ‘pass-through’.

Fully fixed – This is where the supplier fixes for the duration of the contract all elements that make up the pricing with the exception of government taxes. This is the most common type of contract used for SME customers.

Pass-Through – The energy supplier will fix the wholesale cost of energy for the contract duration but other elements such as transmission and distribution, carbon levies etc. that are set by the regulators will be passed onto the customer at whatever rate that is and these can change annually. This type of contract tends to be taken up by the larger energy user.

Once a contract is agreed on, a business will be locked into using the selected supplier for the duration of the contract with the likelihood of having to pay a fee if the business wishes to end the contract early.

Flexible Energy Contract
A Flexible type of energy contract can be custom-made to suit each individual business. Typically, these contracts benefit the very large energy users where they have enough volume to be able to buy in tranches throughout the year.

The benefits of a flexible contract mean that different purchasing strategies can be implemented that enables a business to hedge their purchasing against the price rise and falls of the wholesale energy market.

Still unsure of which type of energy contract would best suit your business?

Finding the right energy contract for your business can be tedious and time consuming but it is important for a business to shop around to see what is available.

Here at BAS Energy, we have helped businesses of all sizes find an energy contract that has been best suited to their needs and budgets. With our knowledge of the forever changing electricity and gas wholesale markets, we can help your business save time and money on your energy bills.

Running Your Business When You Become Ill

Your personal business is very important to you and you don’t want anything to jeopardize its stability. Getting sick can definitely put a damper on your functionality, but it shouldn’t affect your companies’ well-being. There are ways to avoid unnecessary down time for your business whilst you take some time to recover.

Getting sick is not absolutely preventable unless you are Superman. When you do get sick, it is best not to continue to push yourself. Exhaustion and the sickness can drag your body down, and continuing to work can worsen your condition. If you push yourself, you may end up spending even more down time than would have been necessary. Even though your business is extremely important to you, it is best to make sure that your health comes first. If you stay sick, it will be more difficult to run your business.

Finding your trusted representative

Though it is your company, it is wise to find someone that will be able to take on some of the primary duties while you are ill. You will want to find an employee that you trust (possibly a friend or relative) to run errands or represent you at meetings during your illness. It would not appear professional to meet people for business when you are sneezing and have a runny nose. Doing this may seem like you are determined to make the company function, but to people you are meeting it may seem a little rude. This is where your trusted employee can become quite the necessity. Their knowledge and ability to continue your business duties for you can greatly affect the way your business continues to function during your down time.

Soften any negative effects

Planning ahead will help you to adapt to any situation. This is very useful for illness that can definitely set you back. Spending the time to sit down and devise a plan will save time in the future. Coming up with a plan ahead of time will not absolutely solve the problem because there are so many variables, but it will definitely soften any negative effects that an illness may present. With a plan to reference when the time comes, you will be able to adapt to the situation better than if it were a surprise.

The portable office

While you are lying in bed recovering, it is still possible for you to help operate your business. The new technology that is available these days can allow you to work from your bedside. Smartphones and similar devices allow you to maintain your business through the internet. Accessing e-mail and other social media sites is easy and keeps you active in your business while you are still resting. Taking advantage of these new technologies is making it easier than ever to keep your business running no matter where you are.

Your business means a lot to you because it is your legacy. Owning your business may have started out as a job for just you, but remember that everyone needs a little help. Preparing for any situations that may arise at any time can put you one step ahead and relieve some stress while you recover from ailments.

Focus on Plutonic Power Corporation (TSX:PCC) Shaw Capital Management News

Plutonic Power Corporation develops environmentally friendly run-of river hydro projects in British Columbia.

Now before we get into the specifics on this one, let’s first answer the question: What is run-of-river hydro?

Plutonic defines it quite well, stating that run-of-river projects do not actually require any damming of water. Instead, some of the water in a river is diverted and sent into a pipe called a penstock.

This penstock feeds the water downhill to a generating station. The natural force of gravity creates the energy required to spin the turbines that in turn generate electricity. The water leaves the generating station and is returned to the river without altering the existing flow or water levels.

All of Plutonic’s component specifications and construction methods are consistent with providing the least amount of environmental and visual impacts. In fact, in a comparison of environmental impacts, the Ontario Power Authority shows run-of-river hydro to have less of an impact than solar and wind. And of course it rates much better than oil and coal. “In a comparison of environmental impacts, the Ontario Power Authority shows run-ofriver hydro to have less of an impact than solar and wind. And of course it rates much better than oil and coal.”

Shaw Capital Management Korea News: Operations. Plutonic Power is in the process of building out a number of run-of-river hydro projects in Canada. The first to go online will be the East Toba and Montrose project, which is expected to begin operations later in 2010.

The combined installed capacity of this one will be 196 megawatts. All the electricity to be generated from this project will be sold to BC Hydro under a 35-year sales contract.

In the third quarter 2009, 74 percent of the project’s plant construction was completed, and 73 percent of the penstock was completed. 79 percent of the construction of the transmission line was completed.

Shaw Capital Management Korea News: Other projects include: Upper Toba Valley Project (3 facilities). Estimated installed capacity of 166.3 megawatts when completed. Bute Inlet Project (17 facilities). Estimated installed capacity of 1,030 megawatts when completed. Freda Creek Project (1 facility). Estimated installed capacity of 35 megawatts when completed.
The BC Hydro Connection. In June, 2008, BC Hydro launched a Clean Power Call to develop new energy operations. A Request for Proposals followed for projects using proven technologies, such as hydro, wind, solar and geothermal.

This Clean Power Call aligned BC Hydro with the BC Energy Plan which calls for 90 percent of electricity in the province to come from clean or renewable sources and for all new electricity generation projects to have zero net greenhouse gas emissions.

The intent here for BC Hydro is to successfully negotiate power purchase agreements with those chosen from a long list of proposals. … Plutonic is on this list.

And on November 19, 2009, Plutonic Power received notification from By Hydro that the Bute Inlet and Upper Toba Valley Projects will be approved. These projects were proposed jointly with GE Energy Financial Services.

The GE Connection. In August of 2006, Plutonic Power granted GE Energy Financial Services the exclusive right to make a $100 million equity investment and provide $400 million in debt financing for its East Toba River and Montrose project. In return for the equity investment, GE gets a 49 percent equity stake and 60 percent economic interest in the project. Now by the time BC Hydro issued its request for proposals, GE had given an equity contribution of about $79.3 million and extended about another $71.3 million credit for the East Toba River and Montrose project.

GE also formed a join venture with Plutonic last June 2009 to purchase an uncompleted 144-megawatt wind project in northeast BC. This is the largest wind power project under construction in British Columbia. Given British Columbia’s recent announcement that it’s going to establish a ‘Green Energy Advisory Task Force’ to help advance the Province’s climate, Plutonic Power is in a good position. While Plutonic is knows for run-of-river hydro, this deal allows the company to further develop green assets in Canada. The purchase of this wind project was completed on December 11, 2009. Given British Columbia’s recent announcement (November 2, 2009) that it’s going to establish a ‘Green Energy Advisory Task Force’ to help advance the Province’s climate, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build a greener economy, Plutonic Power is in a good position.

Clean Energy: Solar Power Panels or Magnetic Generators? – Advantages and Disadvantages

By dealing with the several Clean Energy sources available nowadays, the question turns up whether we prefer a Solar Energy System or a Magnetic Power Generator.

Generally speaking, I would say that both sources of energy are very good. Nonetheless, each solution has some advantages and disadvantages that we must bear in mind. The advantages of an alternative, clean and renewable energy are clear, mainly because the gotten energy is totally free and non-contaminating, but it has some disadvantages as well. One of these is the room the setting up of these systems demands in our homes: whereas the solar panels can be built on the roof of our house, the magnetic generator needs a specific space to be placed, usually inside our house. Nevertheless, this small inconvenience should not be an impediment if we truly were for a sustainable, clean energy to power our home.

The biggest impediment when introducing a home alternative energy system is, for most of us, the financial issue. Solar energy for powering our home and its different lights and devices would be wonderful, but a full home solar energy system is actually too expensive to fit in the financial possibilities of the average family in almost all countries in the world.

On the other hand, purchasing a magnetic generator is not as easy as that since, at the time I am writing this article, I do not know about any manufacturer that is making and distributing this kind of generators.

So, the issue in that case would be to build a DIY or homemade energy system, either a solar energy or a magnet generator system, or both!

There are some ways in which we can build a set of solar panels ourselves (which are the most expensive item in the solar energy solution) as well as make a magnetic generator with the help of some mechanic specialists nearby.

In my opinion, we could try both systems, since the solar thermal energy or STE (that is to say, the technology for using solar energy in order to get hot water or heating systems) is not as costly as photovoltaics (which translates solar energy directly into electrical power). In my recent stay in India, I was glad to find that in some guesthouses there was “unlimited” hot water service and this was because of the solar thermal energy systems they had built up on the roof. It was a very encouraging bit of news to see how people are moving into alternative, inexhaustible and non-polluting energy sources all around the world.

As for the power our homes need, a solar photovoltaic electricity system would be the right answer… provided that the solar panels were not so outrageously expensive! To overcome this obstacle we have two choices: either we build the solar panels ourselves or we take to the magnetic generator. If you asked me “what would you choose?” my answer would be: “Both!” (If possible, of course, and gradually at any rate).

Finally, if we want to help each other and ourselves by utilising non-contaminating energy sources for the sake of our environment, the two choices mentioned in this article are a very salutary solution. However, they are not the only possibilities to power our homes with clean energy: wind energy is also a very good alternative too, but of this I will speak elsewhere!

A Review of Ambit Energy’s Real Role in Energy Deregulation

Energy deregulation allows a state or portion of a state, such as a city, and the people in it, to choose among different companies, such as Ambit Energy to supply them with electricity. It’s sort of like the phone company, it’s the same lines of electricity, and you now have a choice as to who sells you what’s in the lines.

This will save thousands of people hundreds of dollars on their energy bill every month because it creates competition and competition is the hallmark of downward driven market prices.

Another perk is that consumers have a choice in where their money is going. No longer do they have to tolerate poor customer service and surly operators just because that particular company is the “only game in town”. Now each company that sells consumers electricity must step up to the plate and earn the right to service the customer.

The energy monopolies that once existed will soon be a thing of the past and new companies will spring up eager to earn the trust of the local consumer.

One such company that truly seems to understand what the deregulated consumer needs is Ambit Energy. The relatively new supplier leading the way to lower consumer spending on energy bills is currently marketed in both New York and Texas while eyeing other states as they become available in the very near future.

So why don’t more consumers know about the effects of deregulation?

Many of the consumers in these two states are still unaware that they even have a choice in energy companies or that such savings can be realized. The fact is the majority of consumers have not switched due to lack of education about energy deregulation. Furthermore, it is simply a matter of getting in touch with one of the companies energy consultants.

The actual switch of energy suppliers takes place with a completely seamless interface. There is no charge to switch providers and in fact this particular company even sends you on vacation for doing so.

Similar to when the telecom industry deregulated the current energy conglomerate in an effort to maintain their market share continue to over charge their customers so they can use those billions of dollars to advertise simply to keep overcharging the customer. What a vicious cycle!

According to Ambit Energy’s own website they are the service organization with a vision to be the finest and most respected residential energy provider in the United States.

Although, marketed under the multi-level marketing business model, this company is providing real value to consumers by saving each one between 7% and 20% on their current energy costs depending on the state of residence.

For those with an entrepreneurial spirit, the company even pays consultants a percentage of each personal consumer”s energy bill. The consultants are compensated handsomely in an industry that has an endless demand and consumption product.

Rumors are currently flying about that flaunt this company as being the biggest millionaire maker to arrive on the scene since Excel.

It is widely held that because of experienced and competent management at the helm of this company it will continue to gain market share and provide consumers with savings they are currently unable to obtain in their current energy provider climate. Ambit Energy will have an increasingly huge long term role in the energy deregulation arena.

If you live in a area where deregulation has not begun or even in one where it already has there are always a few things you can do to keep your energy bills lower.

A few common sense tips to save on you energy bill:

Turn on your ceiling fan, reverse the direction because heat rises and this will help to bring the heat back down to where you are. Using your ceiling fan can shave about $10 off you heating bill. Keep warm air in by insulating your house, through doors and windows. Much of the warm air we have is seeping out through cracks in the widow and door frames. Simple insulations can prevent this and save the warm air for you. And change your furnace filter. If the air can’t flow through properly, then it can’t heat your house. Dial down the thermostat. For every degree you dial down on the thermostat, you save 1 to 3 percent on your heating bill.
