Being Prepared With Self-Defense Gear When Exploring Outdoors

When someone enjoys taking excursions into the wilderness, they will most likely want to be prepared for a variety of situations so they are safe at all times. There are several items that will aid in keeping safe if an unexpected encounter with an enemy, either human or animal, occurs. Here are some self-defense gear items that should be kept on-hand when spending time outdoors should this type of encounter occur.

Keep Weapons Ready In Case Of Danger

If an encounter is experienced, having a weapon will be of extreme importance. A wooden or metal staff can be used to strike a large animal or person if needed. A sharp knife or firearm can also be kept in a concealed location on the body in case of an emergency situation. Pepper spray, bear spray, and mace can also be handy if a confrontation happens. It is best to have training in the use of these items if possible.

Make Sure Contact Can Be Made With Others

Some people do not like to explore the outdoors with a cell phone on their person, however, this can be extremely important should an accident or unfavorable event happen. The phone can be kept in a backpack or waterproof bag for the duration of the trip and removed if it is needed. A compass will also be beneficial in trying to navigate unknown territory. In addition, keeping flares, a flashlight, or night-vision eye gear will be useful in getting around during the nighttime hours to get away from an enemy or to get help from someone else if needed.

Select The Right Foot Wear

The shoes worn can make a difference should an enemy be near. Hiking boots will allow for someone to walk in areas of terrain without the fear of slipping as with a soft-soled shoe or sneaker. Shoes with deep treads in the soles will allow for gripping the ground, moving through heavily wooded areas, and keeping from sliding when crossing bodies of water. Select a pair of shoes with a layer of insulation inside to help keep the feet warm during frigid temperatures.
